DESCRIPTION:

The Venus flytrap (Dionaea muscipula) is an extraordinary carnivorous plant belonging to the sundew family (Droseraceae). Native to a very limited geographic range in the United States, the species was first described in 1768. Its most striking feature is its fast-moving traps, which are designed like a leghold trap. Upon stimulation, the Venus flytrap can close its intricately constructed trap leaf extremely quickly to capture insects (especially flies and ants) and spiders. The more the prey struggles and moves, the more it triggers the plant’s carnivorous instincts. Conventional fertilizer, as required by the majority of garden and houseplants, is entirely unsuitable for Dionaea muscipula. The plant obtains its nutrients exclusively from the digestion of live prey. In doing so, it is highly selective and thoroughly tests every catch. In principle, the Venus flytrap does not rely on being fed by human hands, as it catches sufficient food on its own. However, anyone who wishes to experience this breathtaking process live can feed the carnivore themselves.

CULTIVATION:

The cultivation and growing of Dionaea muscipula from seeds is relatively simple and possible indoors all year round. Even beginners usually face no issues with this species. Scatter the seeds onto a well-moistened seed-starting substrate consisting of 2/3 peat and 1/3 sand, and do not press them into the soil. As light germinators, the seeds require sunlight; it is best to cover the propagation container with a glass pane or clear foil. This prevents the surface from drying out and creates an ideal warm, humid climate. Until germination occurs, the soil must never dry out; evaporation losses are best replenished using a water mister. Temperatures above 20°C are ideal for germination. The seeds should begin to germinate after about 20 days. Only older seeds take longer or may not germinate at all.

Watering – Important!

It is best to mist the seeds only with rainwater or distilled water. Do not use tap water, as it contains minerals and salts that are harmful to the plants.
