DESCRIPTION:

The giant allium (Allium giganteum) is a perennial herbaceous plant with a very impressive growth height of 80 to 150 cm. It is a highly decorative show variety with majestic, dense violet spheres up to 20 cm in diameter. It originates from Western and Central Asia. As an ornamental plant, it is used in parks and gardens and forms a wonderful ensemble in flower beds and borders when planted in groups of several plants. However, it can also enchant an elegant home ambiance as a cut flower in a vase, or serve as a very special highlight in a container or planter on balconies and patios. The giant allium requires a nutrient-rich but permeable, well-drained soil. It prefers a sunny, dry to slightly moist location, but tolerates waterlogging poorly. In Central Europe, the giant allium is winter hardy. Propagation occurs through bulb division or by seed.

CULTIVATION:

Generally, the seeds are cold germinators and must be stratified (cold-treated). To do this, place the seeds in small pots with previously moistened sowing soil, press them down lightly, and cover them only minimally or not at all with soil. Afterwards, store them in the refrigerator for 3 to 4 weeks (under no circumstances in the freezer!). During this time, the soil must not dry out and must be kept constantly slightly moist (no waterlogging). Ensure regular ventilation to avoid mold formation.

After stratification, place the pot in a bright and rather cool location (approx. 15°C). Seed germination occurs very irregularly and extends over several weeks to months. Therefore, it is important not to lose patience, as Allium often germinates just when you no longer expect it.
