Growing instructions

Product description
The Giant Sequoia is native to the western slopes of the Sierra Nevada Mountains in California at an elevation between 1,350 and 2,500 meters. The Giant Sequoia has been successfully cultivated around the world. Since the 19th century, it has been cultivated as a winter hardy park tree in western and central Europe. The Giant Sequoia is an evergreen. In its natural environment, it can grow more than 100 meters high, can age more than 2,500 years and reach a trunk diameter of more than 10 meters. Thus, it is one of the most well-known and mightiest trees on Earth.

Sowing:
Sowing of the seeds indoors is possible year around. Before sowing, the seeds must first be stratified (cold treatment). This means cold temperatures must stimulate growth since the seeds begin to grow naturally in the spring. Nature has equipped many tree varieties with this sprout inhibitor to prevent them from sprouting directly after they have fallen in the autumn, as this would cause many seeds to be lost. For stratification, place the seeds in a refrigerator (approx. 5°C) for 10 days to two weeks. The instructions regarding the duration of stratification varies from three days and up to two months depending on the seed source.

After stratification, soak the seeds for 12-24 hours in lukewarm water. Afterwards, place the seeds on cultivation soil in a flowerpot or bowl. Giant Sequoias are light cultivators. This means that the seeds should not be covered with soil. The seeds and the cultivation container should be kept warm and moist. Regularly aerate the cultivation container to avoid mold. Germination is between 2-5 weeks.

For further cultivation, choose a semi-shaded, protected area. Giant Sequoias need a moist and nutrient rich soil. Avoid waterlogging. The young trees can be planted outside after the third year. In the first years, the young trees should be protected against frost.

Please note:
This is a natural product. Therefore, we do not guarantee a sprout or germ for seeds since the conditions under which sowing by the customer is made can not be assessed or influenced by us.
