DESCRIPTION:

The giant leek (Allium giganteum) is a perennial herbaceous plant with a very impressive growth height of 80 to 150 cm. It is a very decorative show variety with stately dense white and purple spheres up to 20 cm in diameter. It originates from Western Asia and Central Asia. As an ornamental plant, it is used in parks and gardens and, as a group with several plants, forms a wonderful ensemble in beds and borders. But it can also enchant the stylish living ambience as a cut plant in a vase or form a very special highlight in a planter or plant pot on the balcony and terrace. The giant leek requires a nutritious but water-permeable, well-drained soil. It prefers a sunny, dry to slightly moist location, but tolerates waterlogging poorly. Sowing:

Generally, the seeds are cold germinators and must be stratified (cold-treated). To do this, place the seeds in small pots with previously moistened sowing soil, press them down lightly and cover them only minimally or not at all with soil. After that, store them in the refrigerator for 3 to 4 weeks (by no means in the freezer!). During this time, the soil must not dry out and must be kept constantly slightly moist (no waterlogging). Also ensure regular ventilation to avoid mold formation.
After stratification, place the pot in a bright and rather cool location (approx. 15°C). The germination of the seeds takes place very irregularly and extends over several weeks to months. Therefore, it is important not to lose patience, because Allium often germinates only when you no longer expect it.
