Product description
Stevia rebaudiana is a perennial native of the Amambai range between Paraguay and Brazil. South American inhabitants have used stavia for hundreds of years in the preparation of food and drink as well as a medicinal plant.
In 1887, Moisés Bertoni, a natural scientist, “discovered” this plant and made this knowledge accessible to the rest of the world.The main interest from then on were the sweet ingredients, steviol glycosides (also called diterpene glycosides). They are 300 times as sweet as sugar, have no calories, are suitable for diabetics and prevent tooth decay.
Sowing:
Sowing is preferably done in seed trays or small flowerpots. Simply squeeze the seeds onto a moist cultivation substrate (e.g. seedling soil, pique soil, potting soil, or coconut humus. Do not cover with soil as stevia is a light germinator. Moisten the soil thoroughly and then cover with a foil or glass, leaving a gap for ventilation. It is important to maintain a germination temperature of at least 22 degrees Celsius. When kept in a bright and warm place (windowsill), the first seedlings often emerge after 10 days. Seed germination rate is about 15%. Each shoot is then transferred to a pot.
The stevia plant loves light and warmth, so a sunny spot, e.g. on the balcony or terrace is ideal. It is important that the plant be placed in a pot of sufficient size (about 16 to 18 cm in diameter) so that storage roots can form.
