DESCRIPTION:

Torch lilies (Kniphofia), also known as red hot pokers, are perennial herbaceous plants that reach impressive growth heights of 80 to 160 centimeters. The highly striking, torch-like inflorescences glow in warm shades of yellow, orange, and red, making them a fantastic eye-catcher in any flower bed. Native primarily to eastern and southern Africa, this perennial is a winter hardy, evergreen flowering plant that is relatively uncomplicated to care for in the garden. However, the torch lily rarely blooms in its first year and needs a bit of time to settle into its final location. Over the years, it becomes increasingly floriferous, producing more and more of its fiery flower stalks.

CULTIVATION:

Sowing takes place from spring to early autumn by placing the seeds shallowly into a permeable, slightly sandy, gravelly, and humus-rich substrate. At temperatures around 20°C, the seeds will germinate after just 7 to 14 days. The substrate should ideally be kept slightly moist using a water mister, ensuring it is neither too wet nor completely dry. The seedlings require plenty of light but must under no circumstances be exposed to direct sunlight. As soon as the young plants have developed about four leaves, they are pricked out (transplanted) and further cultivated in pots until the following spring, as reliable establishment in open ground during autumn cannot be guaranteed.
