DESCRIPTION:

Hollyhocks, also known as Alcea, are a plant genus in the mallow family (Malvaceae). Native to Eastern and Southern Europe, this robust plant blooms for nearly 5 months of the year, from April well into September. Hollyhocks love a sunny, nutrient-rich, and rather dry spot that is as sheltered from the wind as possible. The long, sturdy, and barely branched stems reach a height of up to 180 cm and produce beautiful, multi-colored blossoms. These magnificent hollyhocks are also wonderfully suited as cut flowers for tall vases.

CULTIVATION:

Indoor cultivation is easily possible all year round. If sowing directly outdoors, it must be done by September at the latest so that the hollyhock can bloom the following year. Hollyhocks are biennial, which means they are sown in the first year and only develop their flowers in the second year. Place the seeds on seed-starting soil or substrate, press them down lightly, and cover them with approx. 5 mm of soil or substrate. The substrate must always be kept slightly moist. Clear cling foil or a thin sheet of glass will prevent it from drying out. The germination period is 12 to 18 days at a germination temperature of no more than 20°C. As soon as the first pair of true leaves has formed, the plants grown in a seed tray or propagation pot must be pricked out (transplanted). Afterward, hollyhocks require plenty of space so they do not hinder each other’s growth. No more than five hollyhocks should be planted per square meter.
